New size: 1,280 x 720 px
YouTube takes thumbnails up to 2 MB from the mobile app and 50 MB on a computer. "Keep under 2 MB" is on below, so either works.

How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Size
- Choose a size card, a table row or a chip under New size. Thumbnail (HD), 1280 x 720 px, is selected to start.
- Select Choose files, or drop your image on the page. It is cropped to fill the 16:9 frame.
- Leave Keep under 2 MB on in Advanced settings (optional) so the file also uploads from the YouTube mobile app.
- Select Download, then upload the file to YouTube Studio.
Pick 1280 x 720 or 3840 x 2160
Both sizes are 16:9, the shape YouTube displays, so neither is cropped or letterboxed. They differ only in how many pixels they carry.
1280 x 720 px was long the standard recommendation. YouTube's help page now describes thumbnails up to 3840 x 2160 px and a minimum width of 640 px, so 1280 x 720 is still comfortably above the floor. It makes a small file, which is the point: it uploads quickly and fits the mobile limit with room to spare.
3840 x 2160 px is the largest size YouTube lists. It keeps detail when a thumbnail is shown big, for example on a TV or an expanded view, and gives you headroom to crop. The price is file size. A busy 4K image can easily pass 2 MB.
A practical rule is to start from the larger size when you design, then export 1280 x 720 px if the upload is from a phone. Starting with a small picture and enlarging it to reach 4K only makes it blurry.
Shorts use a different shape. YouTube lists 2160 x 3840 px at 9:16 for them, which isn't one of the presets here. For that, enter the numbers in the Image Resizer.
Upload limits and the 2 MB setting
YouTube sets different file size limits by device. On a computer a thumbnail can be up to 50 MB. In the mobile app the limit is 2 MB. JPG and PNG are the usual formats. YouTube also says your account must be verified before you can upload a custom thumbnail.
Because resizing changes the pixel size but not always the file size, this page turns on Keep under 2 MB for you. It lives in Advanced settings (optional) under Compression. If a file is above the limit, the quality is lowered until it fits. Your 1280 x 720 or 3840 x 2160 px dimensions don't change.
Photos compress well. A graphic with large flat areas and sharp text can be small as a PNG, and a busy photo is usually much smaller as JPG. Set Output format to JPG if the size is a problem. If the file still won't fit, Compress Image gives you more control over the target.
Switch the setting off if you only upload from a computer and want the highest quality.
Keep text inside the visible area
A thumbnail is not always seen whole. YouTube places a video length badge over the bottom-right corner of the picture, so text or a face parked there is covered. Small phone screens also show thumbnails tiny, and long lines of text turn to mush. Aim for a few large words and keep them away from the edges.
Cropping matters too. When your image is a different shape, Crop to fill trims the edges, and the center is kept unless you move it. Open an image's settings and use the focal point picker to keep a face or a title in view. Use Fit with padding when nothing at the edges can be lost.
The Channel banner card works differently. YouTube asks for at least 2048 x 1152 px and recommends 2560 x 1440 px, especially for TV, with a file of 6 MB or less. On different screens the banner is cropped differently, so only a middle strip is always visible. At the minimum size that safe area is 1235 x 338 px, and logos and text should sit inside it.
Keep the banner free of borders, shadows and frames, which YouTube asks you to leave out. For a profile picture, the Crop Image tool can make a circle crop.
Frequently asked questions
What is the YouTube thumbnail size?
YouTube accepts 16:9 thumbnails up to 3840 x 2160 px with a minimum width of 640 px. The long-standing size of 1280 x 720 px still works and makes a smaller file. Use JPG or PNG, and keep the file under 2 MB if you upload from the mobile app.
Is 1280 x 720 still the right thumbnail size?
It still works, because it is 16:9 and above the 640 px minimum width. YouTube now lists 3840 x 2160 px as the top size. Choose 1280 x 720 px for small files and mobile uploads, and 3840 x 2160 px when you want the most detail and can fit the limit.
What is the YouTube thumbnail file size limit?
The limit is 50 MB when you upload from a computer and 2 MB from the YouTube mobile app. This page turns on Keep under 2 MB so a single file works for both. Turn it off in Advanced settings if you only upload from a computer.
What aspect ratio should a thumbnail be?
Use 16:9 for regular videos, the same shape as 1280 x 720 px and 3840 x 2160 px. Shorts thumbnails use 9:16. An image with another shape gets cropped to fill 16:9, or padded with a color if you choose Fit with padding.
What size is a YouTube channel banner?
Upload at least 2048 x 1152 px at 16:9, and use 2560 x 1440 px if you want it to look right on TVs. The file must be 6 MB or less. Only the middle is shown on every device, with a safe area of 1235 x 338 px at the minimum size.
Are my images uploaded to ImagePixo?
No. Resizing and compressing happen in your browser, so your thumbnail is never uploaded to our site. You only send it to YouTube yourself when you add it in Studio. The page needs no account, adds no watermark, and forgets your files when you close the tab.
