Looks the same as High for most photos, much smaller file.
Many older apps can't open AVIF files. JPG opens almost everywhere, so it's the safer choice.
JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas get this color.

An AVIF that will not open
AVIF is a newer image format, built to make photos small at good quality. Current versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari display it, and more websites now serve it to visitors. Save one of those pictures and you end up with a file that the rest of your computer may not understand.
The trouble shows up in the places that move slowly. An older photo editor reports an unknown format. A document program inserts an empty box. A job portal, school form or online store accepts only JPG or PNG and rejects the upload. Some phones and TVs ignore the file entirely.
Renaming it won't help, since the data inside is still AVIF. The file has to be rewritten, and that is what this page does. Each AVIF is decoded in your browser and saved again as a real JPG. If the picture came from a site that handed you WebP instead, WebP to JPG does the same job for that format.
An animated AVIF becomes a single still picture, since a JPG holds one image.
Why JPG is the safe target
JPG has been the default photo format for decades, and almost everything reads it: cameras, phones, printers, email programs, office software, social networks and government portals. If you aren't sure what the next person or program accepts, JPG is the answer least likely to cause a second conversion.
The trade is size. AVIF is among the most compact formats, so the JPG made from it is usually larger than the AVIF you started with, even though it looks the same. That is normal, and no sign of a problem. It also means a JPG can't recover detail that AVIF lost when it was first compressed.
When the JPG has to stay small for a form, run it through Compress Image to reach a target such as 200 KB. If you want to keep a modern format but need broad support, Image Converter can also write PNG and WebP.
Location and camera details are removed from the saved JPG unless you change that in Advanced settings (optional).
High, Balanced or Small
The Quality card sets how much detail the JPG keeps. It has three presets, and you can switch between them at any time.
- High keeps the most detail and makes the largest file. Choose it for pictures you plan to edit or print.
- Balanced is the starting point. For most photos it looks the same as High at a much smaller size, which makes it the sensible default.
- Small gives the smallest file. Fine texture, such as hair, fabric and foliage, may look softer, so check the result before you rely on it.
Quality only changes the JPG's compression. Your picture keeps its pixel dimensions, so a 4,000 px wide AVIF is still 4,000 px wide. Open Advanced settings (optional) if you also want to resize it, or set a quality between the presets or a maximum file size.
A JPG can't be transparent. When an AVIF has clear areas, the Background for transparent areas setting fills them with white unless you pick black, light gray or a color of your own.
Look at the result with Compare before you download. Seeing the original and the JPG side by side is the quickest way to decide whether Small is good enough for this picture.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Add your AVIF file to the page, pick High, Balanced or Small, and wait for the row to finish. Then select Download to save the JPG. You can add many files at once and save them together with Download all (ZIP). No account or software is needed.
Why can I not open an AVIF file?
AVIF is newer than JPG, and many older photo editors, document programs, operating system viewers and upload forms were made before it existed. Modern browsers show AVIF, which is why you can see the picture online but not open the saved file. Converting it to JPG fixes that.
Is JPG or AVIF better quality?
AVIF usually gives the same visual quality at a smaller size, so JPG files made from it are typically larger. JPG is not worse for viewing, though, and works almost everywhere. Choose AVIF to save space where it is supported, and JPG when compatibility matters most.
Which quality preset should I choose?
Start with Balanced, which looks the same as High for most photos at a smaller size. Use High for pictures you will edit or print, and Small when file size matters more than fine detail. Compare the result with the original to confirm it looks right.
Why is my JPG bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture takes more bytes as a JPG. Switch to Small, or lower the quality in Advanced settings, to cut the size. Compress Image can also bring the file under a limit like 500 KB for a form.
Does converting AVIF to JPG upload my images?
No. Your AVIF files are decoded and converted in your browser, so they are never uploaded to a server. You do not need an account, and the JPG carries no watermark. Once you close the page, the images are gone from it.
