Background Remover
Cut out the subject of a photo and save it with a transparent background, or put it on a color, a blur or your own picture. An AI model runs in your browser, so your image is never uploaded.

Transparent saves a PNG you can place on anything. Any other background saves a JPG by default, which is much smaller. You can change the format below.Keep it transparent, or put the subject on a color, a blur of the original or your own picture.
Edges
Follows fine hair and fur in the photo.
Off: the result keeps the original’s size.
Auto saves PNG, which keeps the transparent background.

How to use the Background Remover
- Add a photo with Choose files, or paste one from your clipboard. The first time, the AI model downloads to your browser.
- Wait a few seconds while it removes the background. Compare shows the result against the original on a checkerboard.
- Under New background, keep Transparent, or choose White, Color, Blur original or Image.
- Select Touch up edges if a spot needs fixing, then select Download, or Download all (ZIP) for a batch.
How it works without uploading your photo
Most background removers send your picture to a server. This one doesn't. When you add your first image, the page downloads an AI model and the small program that runs it, and then the model does the work on your own device. Your photo never leaves it.
Two things follow from that. The first photo takes longer, because the model has to arrive first. The page shows the download size in MB while it happens, and your browser keeps the files for later visits. After that, each photo takes a few seconds.
Model quality has two choices. Standard is faster and runs on almost any device. High is better on hair and fine edges, but it needs WebGPU, which not every browser has. The page picks one for your device, and you can change it. The download is about 60 MB for Standard on a processor, about 117 MB for Standard on a GPU, and about 141 MB for High. The Model quality setting shows the size before you start.
Images are processed one at a time to protect your device's memory. On a phone, adding more than five at once asks first, because each one uses a lot of memory and battery. SVG files aren't accepted, since drawings have no photo background to remove.
Choose what goes behind your subject
The New background card decides what the result looks like.
- Transparent keeps nothing behind the subject, ready to place on any design.
- White and Color put the subject on a solid background. Pick a swatch or any color.
- Blur original keeps the original scene, softly out of focus, with a Blur slider.
- Image puts the subject on a picture you choose. Pick Fill to cover the frame, or Fit to show the whole picture.
The Output format is Auto unless you change it. Auto saves a PNG when the background is transparent, because PNG keeps transparency, and a smaller JPG for everything else. Choosing JPG for a transparent result fills the background with white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep it see-through.
Once you have a clean cutout, Crop Image can trim it to a square or a circle. If you only need to change the file type afterward, the Image Converter does that.
Fix the edges when the cutout isn't clean
Automatic cutouts are good, but hair, fur, glass and busy backgrounds can trip them up. You have three ways to fix it.
Edges has a Smoothness slider from 0 to 10 and a Refine hair edges switch. With refine on, the edge follows fine hair and fur. With it off, you get the model's own softer edge.
Crop to subject trims the empty space around the cutout. Add Padding as a percentage so the subject doesn't touch the edge. Off keeps the original size.
Touch up edges appears on each finished image. It opens a brush with Erase and Restore tools and a size slider. Erase removes a bit of background that was left behind, and Restore paints back a piece of the subject that was removed. Your strokes belong to that image only.
One warning for passport photos: the U.S. State Department wants an original, unedited photo, so a replaced background can be rejected. For that, use the US Passport Photo Maker, which checks your photo and doesn't swap the background.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove the background from an image for free?
Add your image to this page and wait a few seconds. The background is removed automatically and shown on a checkerboard, and you can select Download to save it as a PNG with a transparent background. It is free, needs no signup and adds no watermark.
Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?
No. An AI model downloads to your browser once, and it removes the background on your own device. Your photo is never uploaded, so nobody else sees it. The only thing that travels is the model itself, which comes to you, and it is saved for your next visit.
Why does the first photo take so long?
The first photo triggers a one-time download of the AI model and the program that runs it, between about 60 MB and 141 MB, depending on your device and the model quality you use. The page shows its progress. Once it is saved in your browser, later photos start right away and take a few seconds each.
How do I save a photo with a transparent background?
Keep New background on Transparent and the output format on Auto or PNG. PNG stores transparent areas, and WebP does too. JPG cannot, so choosing it fills the background with white. Download the PNG and place it on any slide, design or product image.
Can I fix hair or edges the AI got wrong?
Yes. Turn on Refine hair edges, adjust Smoothness, or select Touch up edges on a finished image. Its brush has Erase and Restore tools, so you can remove leftover background or bring back a piece of the subject. The High model quality also helps on hair if your browser supports it.
Can I remove the background from many photos at once?
Yes. Add them together and they are processed one at a time, then Download all (ZIP) saves the set. They share the same background and edge settings. On a phone, adding more than five at once asks you to confirm first, since every image uses a lot of memory.
