How to use the WebP to JPG Converter
- Select Choose files, or drag in the .webp images you saved from a website. Pasting a copied image also works.
- If a file is an animated WebP, the Choose frame card shows its frames. Pick the one you want. Otherwise, set the Background for transparent areas.
- Wait a moment while each image converts, then compare it with the original if you like.
- Save a single result with its Download button, or use Download all (ZIP) when you converted a handful.
Why the picture you saved is a WebP
You right-click a picture, choose Save image as, and the file ends in .webp. Chrome didn't change anything. It saves the file the website sent, and many sites now send WebP because the files are smaller than JPG or PNG. The address may even end in .jpg while the file behind it is WebP.
Browsers have read WebP for years: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all handle it. Other software lags behind. Office for Windows needs the free WebP Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and so can the Windows Photos app, depending on your version. Some older image editors, job portals and print services accept only JPG.
Renaming the file to .jpg doesn't work, because the picture inside is still WebP, so the app complains or shows nothing. Converting it does work. This page re-saves each WebP as a real JPG, at the standard JPG quality, which looks the same as the original at a glance. It is also a good first step before you hand a picture to a tool that wants JPG, such as Compress Image when a form limits the file size.
Animated WebP: choose the frame you want
A WebP can hold an animation, a bit like a GIF. A JPG holds exactly one picture, so converting an animated WebP means choosing a single frame. Browsers decode only the first frame of one of these files, and that frame is not always the moment you want to keep.
When you add an animated WebP, the Choose frame card appears. It shows a row of small previews you can scroll sideways, up to 60 spread evenly from the first frame to the last, and a label such as "Frame 12 of 48". Select a preview, or use the arrow keys, and the JPG is made from that frame.
If you add several animated files, they share the position you pick, meaning the same point in each animation. Choose a frame for one file alone with the settings button on its row. Ordinary, still WebP files don't need any of this, so for them the card is replaced by the background setting below.
The result is always a still picture. If you need to keep the animation, a JPG can't do it, and you should keep the WebP.
What happens to transparent parts
WebP supports transparency, and a lot of web graphics use it: logos, icons, product cutouts. JPG doesn't. When the converter meets a transparent area, it fills it with a solid color.
The Background for transparent areas card starts on white. Quick swatches give you black or light gray, and a color field lets you type any color. Choose one that matches where the image will be used. A white background is fine on a white page but looks like a box on a dark slide.
If you'd rather keep the see-through look, JPG is the wrong target. WebP to PNG keeps transparency and sharp edges, and the files are still easy to open.
Open Advanced settings (optional) if you want to resize the photo while you convert it, choose a quality level, or ask for a maximum file size. By default, location and camera details are removed from the saved JPG, which is useful when the original came from a photo site.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a WebP image to JPG?
Add the WebP file to this page and it converts immediately. When the row says it is done, select Download to save a real JPG. If the image is an animated WebP, pick the frame you want first. You can also paste a copied image or drop several files at once.
Why does Chrome save images as WebP?
Chrome saves whatever file the website sends, and many websites now serve WebP because it makes pages load faster. The browser does not convert the picture itself. A site can send WebP even when the address ends in .jpg, so the file you save may not match the name you see.
Can I just rename a .webp file to .jpg?
No. Changing the extension does not change what is inside the file. Apps that open JPG will still hit WebP data and usually show an error or a blank image. Converting rewrites the picture as a true JPG, which is why it opens in every program.
What happens to an animated WebP?
You choose one frame, and the JPG is made from it. The Choose frame card shows previews of up to 60 frames spread across the animation, so you can find the exact moment you want. The JPG is a still picture and cannot move, so keep the WebP if you need the animation.
Why did my transparent WebP get a white background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid color, and white is the default. You can switch the fill to black, light gray or any color under Background for transparent areas. For a see-through result, convert to PNG instead of JPG.
Is it safe to convert private images here?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded to a server and nobody else can see them. There is no signup and no watermark added to the JPG. After you close the page, the images are gone from it.
