How to use the US Passport Photo Maker
- Take a photo against a plain white or off-white wall, then choose it, drop it on the page, or paste it. On a phone, Take a photo opens the front camera.
- Wait while the AI models find your face. The tool places your head and eyes inside the guides for you.
- Fine-tune with Zoom, Rotate, or by dragging the photo, and watch the checklist. Check the items marked Check these yourself.
- Under Download options, choose the digital photo, a 4 x 6 in print sheet or both, then select Download.
What the State Department asks for
A US passport photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), printed in color. The rules that matter most:
- Head size: from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, hair included, is 1 to 1 3/8 inches.
- Eye height: your eyes sit between 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 inches up from the bottom of the photo.
- Background: plain white or off-white, with no shadows, texture, objects or lines.
- Glasses: none. Take off eyeglasses, sunglasses and tinted glasses. A medical exception needs a signed note from your doctor.
- Expression: both eyes open, facing the camera. A natural smile is fine.
- Recent: taken within the last 6 months.
- Unaltered: an original photo with no filters, retouching or replaced background.
We checked these against the State Department's photo requirements in October 2026. Agencies change their rules without notice, so read that page before you apply.
How the tool helps, and what it leaves alone
Two small AI models download to your browser once, and then they run on your device. One finds your face, and the other helps measure the top of your head and check the background. Your photo is never uploaded.
After you add a photo, the tool crops it to a square, sizes your head and sets your eye line inside the guides. The Adjust your photo card then lets you change Zoom (50 to 200 percent) and Rotate, or drag the photo into place. Reset returns to the automatic placement.
A live checklist marks each item Looks good or Needs a fix. It covers head size, eye height, whether your eyes are level, whether the background is plain and light, and whether the photo is sharp and high-resolution. A second list, Check these yourself, covers what software can't judge: no glasses, a neutral expression and a recent photo.
Notice what is missing: there's no background swap and no brightness or contrast slider. The State Department asks for an unaltered photo, and an edited one can be rejected, so the tool measures and warns but doesn't retouch. If the checklist flags the background, retake the photo in front of a plain wall. The checklist is a helper, not an official decision.
Digital photo or print sheet
Which file you need depends on how you apply. Download options has two choices, and you can pick both.
Digital photo for online renewal is a square JPG between 600 and 1200 px, saved without location or camera data. The State Department asks for online renewal files between 54 KB and 10 MB, and the tool shows a warning if your file falls outside that range. Online renewal is only open to people who qualify, so check the State Department's page first.
Print sheet is a 4 x 6 in page at 300 DPI with 2 or 4 photos and thin cut lines. Choose JPG, PDF or both. Photo counters at stores such as CVS, Walgreens and Walmart can print the JPG as a regular 4 x 6 in print. If you print the PDF at home, choose Actual size (100%) so each photo stays exactly 2 x 2 in. Use photo paper, then cut along the lines.
Need the 2 x 2 in size for something else, such as a work badge or a form with no photo rules? The Crop Image and Image Resizer tools can make it, and Background Remover can swap the background when no agency is checking it.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a US passport photo?
A US passport photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), which is 600 x 600 px at 300 DPI. Your head, from chin to the top of your hair, must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches. This tool places your photo to match and shows a checklist so you can confirm the measurements before you download.
Can I take my own passport photo with my phone?
Yes, if it follows the rules: a plain white or off-white background, even light, no glasses, and a neutral expression facing the camera. Stand about 4 feet from the camera with your head level. Then add the photo here to size it and check it. Online renewal accepts a digital photo, and a paper application needs a printed one.
Can I change the background to white?
It is risky, and this tool does not offer it. The State Department asks for an original, unaltered photo, and it may reject one whose background was replaced with software. Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall in even light, or hang a white sheet behind you.
Can I wear glasses in a passport photo?
No. Take off eyeglasses, sunglasses and tinted glasses, and do not rest them on your head. The State Department allows a medical exception only with a signed note from your doctor included with your application. If you wear glasses every day, take them off for the shot and look straight at the camera.
What file do I need for an online passport renewal?
Online renewal takes a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file between 54 KB and 10 MB. This tool saves a square JPG between 600 and 1200 px with no location or camera data, and warns you if the size is out of range. Check the State Department page to confirm you can renew online.
Is my passport photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded. The face-finding models download once to your browser and then run on your device. That matters for an ID photo, because the picture never sits on a server. There is no account, and closing the tab clears the photo.
